RABBITS

When you left, every morning
for a week I went out to the
garden and watched the rabbits.
I filled my mouth with dirt
and closed my eyes.
I listened to them run.

Every night I wrote letters
across the ceiling in cursive
shadows with my fingers.
I exhaled the flowers
I should have pulled out of
my mouth and put into yours
while you were still here.
